Tanita Ramburuth-Hurt is a South African astrophysicist, currently working on her PhD at the University of Geneva in Switzerland. She completed both her undergraduate in Physics, and her Masters in Astrophysics at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. Her Masters research was funded by a South African Radio Astronomy Observatory research grant.
Tanita is a member of the Galaxies & Universe research group at the Observatory of Geneva. Her PhD research is on the gas and dust in galaxies, which are an essential ingredient for stellar formation and galaxy evolution, with a focus on investigating the metal content in the ISM. She has a passion for teaching, and discussions about astronomy and (the possibility of) aliens.
Tanita believes that science is for people who have an unshakeable desire to discover, understand and communicate how and why the universe works. The current status quo in the scientific community does not represent all such people, with a bias towards white males. Tanita advocates for those who, due to unfounded stereotypes and historical oppression, have not had the opportunity to fulfill this unshakeable desire. She is part of building a more representative future.
